Brain Natriuretic Peptide (BNP), also known as B-type Natriuretic Peptide and brain natriuretic peptide, is another member of the natriuretic peptide system after cardiac natriuretic peptide (ANP).
Because it was first isolated from pig brain in 1988 by the Japanese scientist Sudoh, it is actually derived mainly from the ventricle. BNP has important pathophysiological significance.
It can promote sodium discharge and urination, has strong vasodilatory effect, and can counter the vasodilatory effect of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). Like ANP, BNP is a major endocrine system for the human body to resist volume overload and hypertension. Cardiac dysfunction can greatly activate the natriuretic peptide system, and increased ventricular load results in the release of BNP.
